The start of the year is always a busy time in our sector. Trade shows and events dominate the calendar for Marketing and Sales professionals and for Netex this is no different.
In fact the second week in February is particularly busy as we exhibited at Europe’s largest digital learning event – Learning Technologies and then we hosted nearly 250 customers in Madrid for our own event, i-love learning. In this article I will focus on the Learning Technologies event in London and will review Madrid in a second blog.
There is always a sense of anticipation leading up to the event, as people descend en masse to to London ExCeL to see the latest digital learning advances. A key theme for Netex at this year’s event was unlocking knowledge and we invited people to our stand to deliver video testimonials, which proved to be a huge success with over 60 videos created over the two days.
In terms of the key themes for vendors on the show floor, in recent years Donald H Taylor’s Global Sentiment Survey – sponsored by Netex – has been a good litmos test for the most discussed items and requested features.
In many respects this global “What’s Hot” list was once again on a par with what the largest vendors were discussing on the exhibition show floor. LXPs and personalized learning experiences dominated the largest stands on show. Though it was interesting in the lead up to the show how leading European HR Tech Analyst Fosway Group facilitated lots of conversation and discussion about moving away from the old classifications of LMS, NGLE and LXP towards Learning Suites and Specialist platforms. Put simply LXPs are starting to backfill with traditional LMS features and LMS vendors are looking to focus on UX. This was confirmed by leading Analyst, David Perring who visited the Netex stand as part of #UNLOCKLT20

Walking around the Exhibition floor, it was noticeable that Learning Technologies is no different to any other tech vendor in that mergers and acquisition are starting to become more prevalent in the sector. New companies are being formed as the industry continues to grow in Europe – a trend that is set to continue in the year ahead judging by some of the conversations on the exhibition floor.
For Netex this was without doubt the busiest show yet, with more visitors on the stand than ever before. One of the key discussions points centred around User Experience at an Admin and Learner level. Visitors are looking for platforms that provide robust analytics, social and content curation and creation features first but within a system that puts UX to the forefront. For this reason we were able to facilitate lots of great conversations around learningCloud.
The Perfect Storm For L&D – Skills, Data and Personalisation
If you ignore the particular relevance of the seminar title – given the recent weather conditions! –, the seminar topic seemed to resonate with the audience on the show floor. The author reviewed the changing workplace and skills deficit that is widening within organisations. Discussing how the advent of convergence of learning and talent systems is leading to personalized learning programmes that are addressing skills gaps in the workplace and thus raising the internal profile of L&D within businesses.
